In 2020, in the wake of the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless others, large-scale protests emerged across the United States demanding for change. As the movement strengthened, protesters were increasingly getting jailed and the private sector was figuring out what role it wants to play in the fight for racial justice.
PROJECT NAME
Supporting national + local Black-led nonprofits
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
At the time, Google, at an institutional level, invested more support to the larger organizations focusing on long-term racial justice, i.e. Equal Justice Initiative, NAACP, etc. This is incredibly important, yet there are many organizations who also needed support, so myself and my director designed an initiative to help close the gap with the support of various parts of the company focused on social impact. We chose orgs that were more centered on the movement at that current moment, meaning orgs focusing on work such as scaling protest campaigns and supporting protesters end-to-end.
IMPACT
Raised over $500K in Googler-led fundraising for Black-led nonprofits across the country. Continued support post-fundraising in media campaigns, cybersecurity, and the like.
